Free Internet and everywhere ... utopia or reality?
A group of boys Freaknet Medialab, Catania decided to aim at solving one of the biggest problems plaguing the world network, which is to eliminate the digital divide .
This term means nothing more that the gap between those who can access the new technologies and who is not. The causes are still being studied but they are definitely related to economic conditions and education and, in many countries including the total lack of infrastructure.
The digital divide is also present in Italy, in fact very second it occurs scholars exclusion of millions of citizens from fast Internet connection, also called broadband. Precisely this problem has led this group of guys to create a network system is not hierarchical, autonomous, anarchic and free.
This system was called "Netsukuku" and UNESCO has defined as an innovation that could eliminate the digital divide globally. It is based on the popular peer-to-peer, or a network node that has no fixed hierarchy as client or server, but an equivalent number of nodes (in English peer) that act as both client from serving on other network nodes . Practically everyone would become a router and through the mutual support of our connections to succeed Netsukuku garamntire its operation.
The 'objective of this system would be to build an infrastructure that is more affordable and independent, allowing access to the network even those who are unable to pay a regular fee to the ISP. The designers of Freaknet Medialab are convinced of being able to support future generations of wireless networks having a range of several kilometers would allow a wide spread of Netsukuku.
Now you just have to wait and see if the Internet for free, anywhere will become a reality or merely utopian.
